FMC CHAIRMAN MARIO CORDERO HONORED BY PORT OF LOS ANGELES AND PORT OF LONG BEACH

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — June 12, 2013 — More than 130 government leaders and dignitaries gathered Monday afternoon, June 10, to celebrate the appointment of new Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Mario Cordero.

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach co-hosted the festivities aboard the historic battleship USS Iowa in San Pedro.

The attendees included Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, Los Angeles City Councilmembers Joe Buscaino and Tom LaBonge, Long Beach City Councilmembers Gerrie Schipske, Dee Andrews, James Johnson and Al Austin, California Transportation Commissioner Fran Inman, Los Angeles Harbor Commission Vice President Dave Arian, Long Beach Harbor Commission President Susan Wise, Long Beach Harbor Commissioners Thomas Fields and Rich Dines, former Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner Joe Radisich, and former Long Beach Commissioners James Hankla, Dr. Mike Walter, John Hancock and John Calhoun.

Cordero was appointed to the Federal Maritime Commission by President Barack Obama and subsequently confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2011. In April of this year, Cordero was appointed FMC Chairman. The FMC is responsible for regulating the nation’s international ocean transportation.

Prior to the FMC, Cordero served on the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners from 2003 to 2011. As an advocate of environmental stewardship and sustainability, Cordero contributed to the development of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan adopted in 2006. He served as Commission President in 2007-2008.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Gardena, Cordero moved to Long Beach in 1974. Cordero has a law degree from the University of Santa Clara and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from California State University, Long Beach.

The Mexican-American Bar Association named him Attorney of the Year in 2007, and he received an environmental award that same year from the League of California Cities.
