LA FLEET WEEK 2018 INCLUDES A MID-WEEK HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE DISASTER RELIEF VILLAGE IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

To Boost Public Awareness & Promote Disaster Preparedness

Aug. 28-29 @ Spring Street b/w 1st St. and Temple St. Will Showcase Military, NGO and First Responder Resources

SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Aug. 23, 2018LA Fleet Week® 2018 presented by Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime Video will include a Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR) Village in Downtown LA, on Spring Street between 1st St. and Temple  St., adjacent to City Hall.

Open to the public Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 28-29, the HADR Village will provide Angelenos in and around the downtown area with a firsthand opportunity to see military and local first responder resources and capabilities that would be activated in the event of a Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA)-level disaster, such as a major earthquake.

“Our first responders are always there for us when disaster strikes — and the men and women of the U.S. Sea Services are an extraordinary resource for communities around the world in times of crisis,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “This HADR Village will give Angelenos a first-hand look at the extensive coordination these emergency responses require, and show all of us why it is so important for our City to be prepared.”

Featuring displays, first responder exhibits and humanitarian assistance demonstrations, the HADR Village will offer both first responders and the military the opportunity to interface with Angelenos, discuss disaster preparedness, and educate the public about how local, state, federal and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) would mobilize in response to a major catastrophic event.

In addition to national security and defense support brought to bear during natural or man-made disasters, local military personnel and first responders are often responsible for providing many immediate and critical services to the public, like clearing transportation routes, facilitating supplies and medical assistance, securing clean and purified water, triaging disaster victims for hospitals, among other duties.

Among HADR Village participants will be several Los Angeles city and county departments, including police, fire, emergency management, animal services, parks and recreation, in addition to Mayor Garcetti’s Crisis Response Team. The US Marines will host a number of exhibits, including displays that include an emergency water purification system. A team from the US Naval Construction Battalions – better known as the Seabees – will also be participating with equipment.  Participating non-profit/non-governmental organizations (NGOs) include the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and International Medical Corps.

The HADR Village will be located at 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90012 (free parking available at 1st St. and Broadway). The free event will be open from 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
