AVIN SHARMA - Director of Labor Relations and Workforce Development

Avin Sharma is the Director of Labor Relations and Workforce Development for the Port of Los Angeles. He was appointed the director of this newly created division at the Port in October 2017. Prior to joining the Port of Los Angeles, he served as the White House Liaison and Counselor to former U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez. Prior to that position, he served as the Economics Director in the Presidential Personnel Office at The White House, and also previously served at the U.S. Department of Justice.

In his new role at the Port, Sharma is responsible for engaging and maintaining positive relationships with key labor unions, such as the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and Teamsters, and working on key projects that support supply chain workforce development.

Sharma will take the lead for the Port on a current project with labor, industry, and other institutional partners to establish a Port Workforce Training Center in Wilmington, Calif. This partnership currently includes representatives from the Port of Los Angeles, ILWU, Pacific Maritime Association, City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Department, and Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles.

Sharma attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned bachelors of art degrees in business economics and political science. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended the University of California, Hastings College of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate and soon after was admitted to the State Bar of California.
