PORT OF LOS ANGELES AND GE TRANSPORTATION HONORED
FOR INNOVATIVE DIGITAL SHIPPING SOLUTION

American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and City of LA Information Technology Agency Announce Awards

SAN PEDRO, Calif. - Sept. 18, 2017 - The Port of Los Angeles has won two technology awards for its Port Information Portal Project, a first-of-its-kind digital solution being undertaken in partnership with GE Transportation to help improve goods movement and cargo efficiency at the Port. The initiative started as a pilot last November and will be expanded to all container terminals and shipping lines at the Port in the coming months.

“For the first time, we have we been able to provide supply chain partners with timely access to cargo and shipping information from a single interface,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “As we expand this project throughout the Port, we’re optimistic that we’ll see significant efficiency gains throughout our supply chain operations.”

“We greatly appreciate the Port’s confidence in our digital technology, and for championing such an important innovation with so much potential for the broader supply chain ecosystem,” said Jamie Miller, president and CEO at GE Transportation. “As we continue to improve the solution based on the feedback we’ve heard from the pilot participants, we’re especially honored to be recognized by both the City of Los Angeles and the maritime industry for our involvement and commitment to this successful public-private partnership.”

The two awards received include the “2017 Outstanding IT Project Award” from the City of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency, which honors outstanding achievements and innovative technology initiatives in the public sector for the County and City of Los Angeles. In addition, the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) will officially present the AAPA’s “Information Technology Award” to the Port on Oct. 4, which recognizes improvements in intermodal freight transportation, as well as accomplishments and best practices in the technology area.

The goal of the project is to provide maritime supply chain partners greater reliability, predictability and line-of-sight planning capabilities. For the first time, through the portal’s digital interface, participating cargo owners, shipping lines and other stakeholders have access to channeled maritime shipping data through a single, secure access point. Because of the pilot’s success, the Port and GE Transportation agreed last month to new commercial agreements of up to $12 million to extend the pilot to other shipping lines and terminals at the Port over the next five years.

The Port of Los Angeles is America’s premier port and has a strong commitment to developing innovatively strategic and sustainable operations that benefit Southern California’s economy and quality of life. North America’s leading seaport by container volume and cargo value, the Port of Los Angeles facilitated $272 billion in trade during 2016.  San Pedro Bay port complex operations and commerce facilitate one in nine jobs in the five-county Southern California region.
