U.S. Borax Inc., part of Rio Tinto, is a global leader in the supply and science of borates—naturally-occurring minerals containing boron and other elements. They are 1,000 people serving 500 customers with more than 1,700 delivery locations globally. They supply 30% of the world’s need for refined borates from their world-class mine in Boron, California, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Since 1923, U.S. Borax has owned and operated its refinery and shipping terminal in Wilmington — the only privately held facility at the Port of Los Angeles.

Terminal Improvements

Rio Tinto

In 2016, Rio Tinto installed a 200hp air compressor, two dense phase conveyors, two dust collectors, truck scale and loading platform that provide air quality and traffic benefits by allowing the product to be transported from Boran by rail, reducing the number of truck trips by 25%.
