PORT OF LOS ANGELES' SCHOOL BOAT TOURS HOST MORE THAN 14,000 STUDENTS, EDUCATORS

SAN PEDRO, Calif. – July 1, 2019 – The Port of Los Angeles welcomed 14,145 students and educators in the fiscal year that ended June 30.  The record-breaking number represents a 13.3% increase from the previous fiscal year.

“Students and educators are vital Port stakeholders,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “Their interest in a hands-on learning experience bodes well for the future of global trade in our region. We are pleased to see the continued growth of our school boat tour program and look forward to hosting more students in the future.”

Over the last 12 months, the school boat tour program hosted more than 200 elementary, middle, high school and university groups. Visitors ranged from local students in the Greater Los Angeles area to international guests from Australia, Germany, Mexico and Tunisia.

Created in 1997 in cooperation with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Port of Los Angeles’ school boat tour program is one of several Port-sponsored educational initiatives aimed at fostering a better understanding of Port cargo operations; international trade and commerce; and the importance of the marine environment and its ecosystems. The tours are provided free of charge by the Port. Qualifying schools are eligible for a bus subsidy.
