The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) Summer Internship Program provides a unique opportunity of experiential learning, networking, and personal development for undergraduate and graduate students. Placement assignments are made based on a combination of factors, including the needs of the participating divisions, the intern’s skill set and availability in the intern’s expressed area of interest. The duration of the program will be from May 29, 2018 to September 14, 2018.

Work Schedules: Interns are allowed to work 20 hours per week.

Internship requirements:

  2. Are expected to be motivated, responsible, punctual, and committed,
  3. Must be community college or university students,
  4. Returning to school in the Fall,
  5. With a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (3.0 for graduate students),
  6. Adhere to the Department’s Dress Code Policy.

Incomplete submissions will not be considered for internship.

Dress Code Policy
As representatives of the Port of Los Angeles, the personal appearance, quality of customer service, and positive attitude of all employees, including student workers, are essential to creating and maintaining a positive work environment and a favorable public image. This dress code policy sets a standard to ensure that our personal appearance is always appropriate and professional. Attire is considered appropriate if it is the right image to portray before a customer or the public on a given day, and on a given work assignment. Some examples of inappropriate attire are jeans, flip-flops, tank tops, and shorts.

Internship Pay: Community College students, or University Freshmen, Sophomores, or Juniors will be paid $14.89 per hour. University Seniors or Graduate students will be paid $16.40 per hour.

Internship selection process: Resume reviews will be conducted by representatives from participating Divisions. Selections will be made based on criteria related to the needs of the division, matching interns with their expressed area of interest or course of study.
