PORT OF LOS ANGELES RECEIVES U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL GOLD LEED™ CERTIFICATION FOR NEW PORT POLICE BUILDING
60-day First Gold Rating for the Port of Los Angeles and San Pedro
SAN PEDRO, Calif. — March 27, 2012 — The Port of Los Angeles has received gold-level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) rating system for its new Los Angeles Port Police Headquarters building.

Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D. “We’re proud that this is the first LEED™-registered gold status building not only at the Port but in San Pedro.”
The new building, which Port Police moved into recently, was designed with sustainability as a key driver from the inception of the project to incorporate sustainable, environmentally sound elements that contribute to a high-performing facility that meets the LEED™ requirements for initial and long-term operating efficiency. Sustainable design elements include:
- Pervious paving and landscaped bio-filtration/stormwater retention areas
- High-reflectance paving and cool roof materials to reduce heat island impacts
- Native landscape materials and reduction of installed turf (less than 10% of landscaped area)
- High-efficiency irrigation equipment and controllers
- High-efficiency domestic water fixtures
- Overall energy performance exceeds Title-24 2001 energy standards
- A 4.08 kW photovoltaic array estimated to generate 5,990 kWh of electricity annually
- Reduced lighting power density by 25% from baseline Title-24 standards
- Intensive daylighting throughout
- High efficiency HVAC units with variable speed fans
- 95% construction waste diversion from landfill
- More than 50% of the total construction materials (by value) were manufactured using recycled content
- More than 80% of the total construction materials (by value) have been manufactured within 500 miles of the project site
Los Angeles Port Police Headquarters connects the community with the Los Angeles Port Police. The 50,000-square-foot, three-story building was under construction for three years at a total cost of approximately $60 million. Prior to its demolition in 2008, the former building on the site housed administrative offices for Evergreen Shipping Line.
LEED™ promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite of rating systems that recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance. The Port Police building received a total score of 42 points, qualifying for a gold rating for new construction. Points were earned in the following categories: sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; and innovation and design process.
This certification is the first gold rating for the Port of Los Angeles. The Port Administration Building is also LEED™-registered, and Los Angeles City Fire Station No. 36 is the only other LEED™-certified building in San Pedro. In nearby Wilmington, Los Angeles Harbor College’s Northeast Academic Hall and Student Services building also has a LEED™ gold rating.
